Local information

The summer school will officially start 19 July after lunch. In the morning of July 19 a visit to the ARTS laboratory in Pisa (the suburb Pontedera - see how to get there/Local hotels) has been organised. It might thus be advisable to arrive Sunday July 18 to Pisa, unless you have easy access to Pisa / Florence on Monday morning. Upon completion of the visit to the ARTS laboratory a bus has been organised to take all participant to the venue of the summer school (Departure 1PM from Pontedera). On Friday afternoon a return bus has been organised for transfer from Volterra, to Pisa airport (Departure 4PM from Volterra). The local organiser committee can assist with reservation of local hotels prior to or after the summer school, to accommodate your travel schedule. See also information on Hotels in Pisa

Two major airports can be used to reach the Volterra city. The Florence Airport or the Pisa International Airport. The city of Volterra is situated 64 km from Pisa (airport) and 72 km from Florence airport. The location of the city is shown on the map below

Note that Pisa airport is easily accessible by low-fare carriers such as Ryan Air and Hapag-Lloyd Express From several of the hubs it should be possible to go to Pisa for less than $25.

Unless arriving by bus the recommeded mode of transportation is using a rental car. Major agencies are available both at the Pisa and Florence airport.

Please inform the local organiser committee of your time of arrival and departure to allow coordination of joint transportation (please also inform us if you do not plan to use the bus).
